Tile’s tracker technology is coming to Intel laptops
Always losing your laptop? Tile will soon be able to help.
The company best known for making little tracking doohickeys announced a partnership with Intel on Thursday. The same tech powering those tracking devices will live inside some laptops and notebooks powered by Intel processors starting later this year.
In other words, tons of laptops will be findable through the Tile app as long as their manufacturers choose to support it. You won’t need to buy a physical Tile tracker and the feature will supposedly work even when the laptop is asleep. If your machine gets lost or pilfered by an amoral brigand, just load up the Tile app to find it.
Tile actually partnered with another PC manufacturer earlier this year for similar reasons. HP’s expensive Elite Dragonfly was the first laptop with Tile’s tracker technology.
The partnership with Intel is much broader in scope, though, and could give Tile an advantage over competitors. One such company is Apple. The MacBook and iPhone maker’s Tile-like tracking device has been an open secret for more than a year, but for some reason, we still don’t have official confirmation of its existence. It’s worth noting that Apple already has the “Find My” feature on its devices.
Until Apple launches its tracker, Tile will be entrenched as the biggest name in a niche (but valuable) corner of the tech marketplace. After all, everyone loses things.
