Amazon showed off several new Echo speakers at its hardware event on Wednesday, including what is basically a talking nightlight.
First and foremost is the basic Amazon Echo. Amazon refreshed its flagship smart speaker with better audio quality and new fabric on the exterior, but other than that, it’s still the $99.99 Echo you know and love (or hate).
On the more interesting side of the Echo spectrum is the Echo Flex. The $24.99 box plugs directly into a wall outlet and has a small speaker on it so Alexa can talk back to you. Amazon is positioning this as something you might want to use to supplement other smart devices, which can be commanded via Echo Flex.
You can also use a USB port on it to charge your phone or plug in an accessory without using up another outlet.
The Echo Flex is tiny.
Amazon also unveiled the Echo Dot Clock, which is, surprise, an Echo Dot with a clock on it. It can also be used to set timers and alarms, as well as tell you the temperature. There isn’t much else to say about it, but it can be yours for $59.99.
For audiophiles, Amazon is launching a high-end Echo speaker. The Echo Studio ($199.99) provides “3D audio,” which means it calibrates sound to fit different rooms. Apple’s HomePod has a similar feature.
You can even connect the Echo Studio to “select Fire TV devices” and use it as an audio output for whatever you’re watching, which is nifty.
Last but not least, Amazon refreshed its Echo Show line with the Echo Show 8 ($130). For the layman, this is the one with a screen on it. You can tell Alexa to watch Prime Video shows on it, in addition to the other things an Alexa device usually does. Amazon is also partnering with Food Network so users can take virtual cooking classes if they have a Food Network Kitchen subscription.
