Tesla releases less expensive Model 3
Nothing says “for the people” like a $45,000 car.
Tesla has once again changed the game, this time with the release of a slightly less expensive version of its Model 3. Announced by Elon Musk via Twitter, the new mid-range sedan is available for order now in black, midnight silver metallic, deep blue metallic, pearl white, and red — though anything but the black will cost you an added premium of $1,500 to $2,500.
The more affordable Tesla sports a 260-mile range, a 125 mph top speed, and goes from 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds.
Interestingly, the website lists the price of the Model 3 Mid Range Rear-Wheel Drive car as both $47,500 (before savings) and $45,000.
In less confusing news, if you “take delivery” by the end of the year, you are “eligible for the full $7,500 Federal Tax Credit” — bringing the price down to $33,200 (“After incentives & gas savings”).
Notably, delivery takes six to 10 weeks. So, you know, better order quickly. Oh, and one other thing: The “standard battery” isn’t available for another four to six months. So, if you do go with that option, your sweet Federal Tax credit is going to be diminished.
To get the bargain-basement price, you must also select the rear-wheel drive (as opposed to all-wheel drive) option, and the standard autopilot (nothing enhanced for you!).
But for enthusiasts looking to make the switch to Tesla’s line of all-electric vehicles, those compromises may be nothing more than ignored warning signs on the autopilot-dominated road of life.
