Save $360 on the 2017 Microsoft Surface Pro — still one of the best 2-in-1 laptops out there
Congrats: If you’ve held out this long through the shopping season, anxiously awaiting discounts bigger than Black Friday, you made a smart move.
Best Buy’s 20 Days of Doorbusters continues with a massive deal on one of the best 2-in-1 laptops out there: 2017’s 5th generation Microsoft Surface Pro, now on sale for a whopping $360 off, keyboard included.
Yes, the newer Pro 6 did just come out earlier this month and yes, and it is undoubtedly spiffy as hell. But TBH, the upgrades are pretty light, and if you’re truly on a mission to save (which is probably why you clicked on this story), the 5th generation definitely holds its own — especially now that it’s about $500 cheaper than similar 6th generation models at their full price.
(If you already have the 2017 model and are wondering if you should upgrade, here’s the short answer: Probably not.)
Aside from one new color option (matte black), the 6th generation Pro sees literally no cosmetic changes. There’s not much to mention with hardware changes, either, except the next generation Intel CPU. (Check out a good comparison piece here.)
The 5th generation sees a 12.3-inch touchscreen with a 2736 x 1824 resolution (the same as the Pro 6) which is more than enough detail for HD streaming, graphic design, and other pixel-intense stuff, making it easy to switch from a laptop to a tablet without a pause in the action. Everything operates on Windows 10 and, like with the Pro 6, you can sign in with facial recognition using Windows Hello. The Surface Pen isn’t included with the 5th nor 6th generation, but they keyboard is (which isn’t always the case).
As for the more nitty gritty tech specs, the 5th generation Surface Pro is armed with an Intel Core M3 processor, 128 GB SSD (which can expand with a micro SD card), 4 GB memory, and is available for LTE connectivity.
The bottom line? Unless you are an avid techie who will pick up on tiny differences in processing speeds or really need that new matte shade to keep up your all-black-everything aesthetic, the 2017 Surface Pro harnesses more than enough power and performance for the average person. Regularly $959, you can grab the keyboard-included version for just $596. (Today only, so hurry!)
