Samsung teases what appears to be the Galaxy Fold 2
With Galaxy Unpacked 2020 only a short while away, Samsung continues to tease its upcoming products ahead of the event on social media — the latest being what appears to be the Galaxy Fold 2.
On Sunday, the company tweeted “One fold, infinite possibilities. Unpacked on August 5, 2020” with a video of what clearly mimics a foldable phone.
There’s been some speculation around whether Samsung would include the new Fold on what could already be an extensive list of product announcements. So far we’ve already seen leaks for the Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Tab S7+, “Galaxy Beans” earbuds, and a Galaxy Z Flip 5G.
The tweet also comes only a few days after well-known leaker Max Weinbach tweeted the Fold 2 announcement is actually slated for October. This was in response to his original tweet claiming the Fold 2 wasn’t going to be unveiled at 2020’s Unpacked.
But Samsung seems to be hinting otherwise. The second-generation version would come a little over a year after the original Galaxy Fold was released.
Of course, specs are still very much up in the air. But Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, seemed to have an idea of what to expect since April.
After Korean publication ETNews confirmed Galaxy Fold 2 specs in June, Young took to Twitter to post screenshots of the supposed specs.
According to his tweets, the Fold 2 could have a larger display on the inside coming at 7.5 inches, versus the original’s 7.3-inch display. The front display on the Fold 2 might also be bigger, at 6.23 inches compared to the much smaller 4.3-inch cover on its predecessor.
Additionally, the Fold 2 could come with a 120Hz refresh rate which would make sense considering Samsung’s S20 lineup announced back in February comes with that feature as well.
Judging by the promotional video from Samsung, it’ll likely also come in the “Mystic Bronze” color the company has clearly chosen as a common theme for its hardware lineup.
As for price, the Fold 2 might actually be cheaper than 2019’s model — even with the upgrades.
More Galaxy Fold 2 Leaks:
Price – Between $1780 and $1980. Since they are looking to boost volumes, we think it will be priced around $100 less than last year at $1880-$1895 despite a bigger/better front and main display, a higher resolution camera, the S-Pen and 5G.— Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) April 27, 2020
Rather than the pricey $1,980 of the Fold, the Fold 2 might only set you back $1880. Sure, that’s still expensive but perhaps the lower price will entice more people to invest in the device.
However, it looks like it won’t come with an S Pen so those of you looking forward to that addition might have to opt for what could be the Note 20 Ultra instead. While Young’s tweet above claims the Fold 2 would feature the accessory, he confirmed as of June that Samsung would not longer be including it.
Originally we were told it would have it. A few weeks ago we were told it would not have it. We published this in our weekly report a couple of weeks ago. May be difficult to justify the Fold 2 over the Note 20 Ultra/Plus.

This also corroborates a report from another Korean publication known as The Elec. According to sources that spoke to the site, Samsung did try to think of different methods to house the stylus within the device but ultimately, decided to leave the idea for 2021’s model.
It would make sense for Samsung to be extra careful with the Fold 2’s durability. I mean, we all remember #FoldGate, right? You know, that time when a bunch of tech reporters ran into tons of issues like a broken display and a peeling protective layer while reviewing the phone for a short period of time.
According to another tweet from Young, the Fold 2 might feature Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) as featured on the Galaxy Z Flip. It apparently should be more durable than the glass on the original Fold.
While I didn’t have any issues with the display while using the Z Flip, I didn’t get to spend more than 24 hours with it. But it’s safe to say that phone didn’t experience the same disastrous launch as the Fold did.
Of course, it looks like we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the Fold 2. Let’s hope Samsung gets it right the second time around.
