In 2017, Amazon unveiled one of its most unusual Echo-branded smart devices in the form of the fashion-focused Echo Look. Three years later, the Look is being discontinued and they will all stop working on July 24.
The Echo Look was launched in April 2017, but the $200 device could only be purchased by way of invitation until that restriction lifted in June the following year. The Alexa-enabled camera was designed to act as your personal stylist, working in sync with the Look’s companion app and offering suggestions on what to wear while also allowing you to share photos and videos on social media.
As The Verge reports, the Echo Look becomes a useless device on July 24. Amazon won’t sell the device anymore and is turning off all functionality next month. The official Echo Look FAQ suggests using Amazon’s free device recycling program to get rid of the Look, while at the same time encouraging users to back up any images and videos they have stored on their Look. After July 24, “you will no longer be able to access your photos and videos through the Echo Look app.”
Amazon points out in the FAQ that anyone who would still like to access the features offered by the Look should instead download the Amazon Shopping app for Android or iOS. The app contains Style by Alexa for fashion tips, and any Alexa-enabled device will attempt to help if you ask, “Alexa, what should I wear?”
Rendering the Echo Look device useless seems like a waste, especially when it contains a perfectly good camera and sourcing a webcam right now is quite difficult. Surely Amazon could have re-purposed the Look with very little work?
