Motorola’s foldable Razr is delayed because it’s already too popular
Welp. The most promising foldable phone we’ve seen yet has bee delayed — because it’s already too popular.
Motorola announced that it’s delaying the launch of its Razr reboot in order to ensure it has enough of the phones to meet demand. The company was originally supposed to open pre-orders on December 26, 2019 with the phone going on sale January 9, 2020.
But the company now says it’s had to “adjust” the timing due to higher than anticipated demand.
“Since its announcement in November, the new Motorola Razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers,” the company said in a statement. “Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions. Motorola has decided to adjust Razr’s presale and launch timing to better meet consumer demand. “
Motorola hasn’t provided an exact date for when it not expects the phone to go on sale, but suggests the delay shouldn’t be long.
“We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure that more consumers have access to Razr at launch,” Motorola said. “We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline.”
The delay will no doubt bring up comparisons to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which was also delayed at the last minute. Of course in Samsung’s case, this was due to some major hardware issues. But while we haven’t yet been able to extensively test the Razr, we’ve been impressed by what we’ve seen. And Motorola executives has made clear they are extremely confident in the phone’s unique hinge system.
Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out.
