A 27-year-old hiker has been missing on Hawaii’s Big Island for more than a week.
Kyle Brittain was last seen on August 30 while hiking in the forests of Waipio Valley.
His father, Steve Brittain, told KHON that another hiker last saw Kyle near a bathroom at the Waipio Valley overlook around 6 a.m.
“He asked where the bathroom was and said, ‘Hey have a good day,’ and that was the last time,” Steve Brittain told KHON.
Steve Brittain told NBC News that his son is an experienced hiker who has been hiking since he was a child.
He said Kyle told him he was going to hike the Waipio Valley’s Z Trail, but hadn’t planned on doing the entire 12-mile hike.
The Z Trail, nicknamed because of the route’s zig-zag shape, climbs 1,200 feet to the top of a ridge before descending into the Waimanu Valley.
He had brought water, power bars, and his cellphone, but “wasn’t prepared to be a week in the wilderness,” Steve Brittain said.
He added that it was Labor Day weekend, so “there were hundreds of people out hiking, camping in the valley and walking around” at the time of Kyle’s disappearance.
Kyle Brittain’s car was found, WTHR reported, but police have not disclosed its location. His phone pinged on the mountain at 8:30 a.m. on August 30, before he lost service, according to CNN.
His sister-in-law Heather Lee, told CNN that a police search ended after five days, but a volunteer search is still ongoing.
Searchers who helped find Maui hiker Amanda Eller in May have flown to the Big Island to help search for Brittain.
Eller spent 17 days in a Hawaiian jungle before she was found alive in the Makawao Forest Reserve in Maui. Police had called off the search after just three days.
Another Maui hiker, Noah “Kekai” Mina, was found dead in May days after he went missing.
Volunteers are also searching for another missing hiker in Hawaii — Khiara Henry, 23, of San Diego, California. She was last seen on July 31 when she went for a hike in the Waianapanapa Park area on Maui, KHON reported.
Her family is offering a $10,000 cash reward for a tip leading to Henry’s safe return.
In the search for Brittain, volunteers have brought in dogs, flown helicopters, and repelled into ravines looking for the 27-year-old.
“Unfortunately, we’re starting to look for things we don’t want to look for because it’s been a week so we’re starting to look in the rivers and the swamps. I mean, we have to look everywhere right?” Steve Brittain told KHON.
Brittain’s family has launched a GoFundMe and a Facebook page to help raise funds and spread the word of his disappearance.
