It looks more and more like GM will release an electric Hummer
Arnold Schwarzenegger gets it. The movie star and former California governor unveiled a converted electric Hummer back in 2017. Now, long after the gas guzzlers were discontinued in 2010, GM could be giving the Hummer an official electric makeover.
All the clues point to General Motors rebooting the Hummer, this time under the GMC brand. The rumors first surfaced last year after Rivian, Ford, and Tesla unveiled plans for their own electric trucks and SUVs.
Then this week GM announced it would spend $2.2 billion on its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which would produce only electric vehicles. This is the same plant that was facing hundreds of layoffs. Now the EV factory will offer 2,200 jobs. First up for assembly is an electric pickup truck, followed by the self-driving Cruise Origin. What better place to revive the Hummer as an electric beast?
As for when we might first see the new Hummer, keep an eye out on Sunday during the Super Bowl. An ad featuring NBA superstar LeBron James is expected to air during the football game to introduce the new SUV, which has a 2022 target launch date, the Wall Street Journal reported.
At the plant announcement, GM president Mark Reuss encouraged people to watch the big game. While he didn’t name-drop any specific cars, it certainly adds credibility to the rumors that the Hummer is making comeback.
