TL;DR: Arlo is offering $50 to anyone who trades in an old video doorbell and opts for the Arlo Video Doorbell, taking the price from $149.99 to $99.99.

Ring cameras have kind of turned into a hacker’s playground. There was the incident with a hacker pretending to be Santa Claus and one with a hacker yelling racial slurs at a child, which Ring recently faced a lawsuit over. (This is all just since December 2019.) Ring has also had its fair share of issues with user info getting out to third parties — or surveillance of trick-or-treating to Twitter.

Maybe it’s not fair to single Ring out. This could happen to any security software, and Ring has actively been working on giving users better privacy settings.

But if you feel less safe after adding a security camera or doorbell to your house — or are just extra paranoid and would prefer a bigger field of vision on your porch — it’s understandable. Arlo has a proposition: It’ll give you $50 to ditch your existing smart doorbell in a promo Arlo has literally named “Ding Dong Ditch.”

Aside from a much less questionable privacy history, Arlo’s first video doorbell has a lot of unique features that make it stand out from Ring as well as Nest. The viewing angle has been upped to 180-degrees with a square aspect ratio that gives you a more complete view of what’s going on around your door, including a head-to-toe look at visitors and packages on the ground.

Sketched out by your Ring doorbell? Arlo will pay you $50 to switch.

You can arm or disarm your house using the Arlo app, set automated schedules to do so based on when you leave and get home every day, or set it disarm when your phone is in a certain range. The video doorbell will send alerts whenever movement is sensed, correctly identifying people and animals.

One feature that competitors don’t have but Arlo does is a built-in siren, which sounds at more than 100 decibels and is connected to an e911 service. It goes off when someone tries tamper with the doorbell or can be triggered by you if you see something weird going down on the app.

Use code doorbell50 at checkout to indicate that you’ll be trading in an old doorbell from a list of eligible models, and Arlo will send you a prepaid shipping label to send it back. Once yours is returned, a $50 credit will be added and your Arlo Video Doorbell will end up costing a mere $99.99.
