eBay will begin rolling out Apple Pay this fall
eBay is continuing its transition away from PayPal as the auction site’s primary payment-processing service by adding new ways to pay.
Apple Pay will be the first new payment service the site has added since spinning off PayPal a few years ago. EBay has continued to support PayPal, which manages transactions for users who select that option. However, eBay will start handling a limited number of transactions itself, starting in the U.S. and will offer Apple Pay as one of the payment options in those cases.
As announced in January, PayPal is partnering with Ayden as its primary payments processor. That’s a big step for the eBay Marketplace since Ayden is purely a back-end system, and will open up a plethora of payment options for customers. It also makes eBay less dependent on PayPal, which will still be an option for users — just a less and less prominent one over time.
Apple Pay becoming an option is a big win Apple and iPhone users. When the option is in place, Apple Pay users will be able to use Face ID, Touch ID (on iOS or macOS), and even an Apple Watch to authenticate payments.
In a statement Steve Fisher, senior VP of payments at eBay said, “Apple Pay is one of the most ubiquitous forms of payments and provides users with an easy, fast and secure way to pay. Offering Apple Pay as a form of payment on eBay is the first step in providing more choice and flexibility in payment options to our tens of millions of buyers.”
eBay is moving ahead, and in the next few years, all customers should be able to complete purchases without leaving the site or app through new payment forms. In the meantime, US customers can keep their eyes peeled for Apple Pay in the fall.
