Bust the bad guys with these smart and affordable home security systems
Earlier this month, police in suburban Oregon responded to a 911 call from two men who reported that a burglar was locked inside the bathroom of their Beaverton-area home. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers heard banging noises coming from inside the room and assumed the intruder was trying to escape through a window. So, with their guns pointed and a canine unit at the ready, they burst through the door… only to find a disoriented little Roomba bumping itself against the shower door.
Unfortunately, few housebreaking cases end on such a high (or hilarious) note: According to the FBI’s most recent Crime in the U.S. report, burglars cost their victims an estimated $3.4 billion in total property losses in 2017, with each incident costing its victim(s) a whopping $2,416 on average. And that’s on top of the emotional distress one suffers when a rando breaks into your home.
On the bright side, a UNC Charlotte survey of convicted burglars found that a simple home alarm system is typically enough to deter a wannabe thief. A few such options are available through Scout Home Security, on sale now for a limited time.
This introductory package to Scout’s wireless security solutions is anything but basic: It includes a Scout hub, a door panel, a 25-foot motion sensor that works day and night, two access sensors for any entryway, two key fobs, and even a yard sign. Once you sign up for a monitoring plan (starting at $9.99 per month) and download the Scout app, you’ll be able to easily keep tabs on your pad, set custom alerts, and arm/disarm the system from anywhere using just your smartphone or computer. If an intruder happens to wander onto your property, Scout’s system will sound a 105-decibel alarm and send a notification to your device immediately.
You’d spend nearly $320 if you bought each of those products and accessories separately through the Scout website, but Mashable readers can get the whole package for just $299.
You can arm your abode with one of the toughest security systems on the market by upgrading to Scout’s Exclusive package, which contains everything offered in its Small Pack, plus an HD indoor security camera for ultimate protection.
For a limited time, Mashable readers can score this premium bundle for only $399.
