Amazon Restaurants food delivery service is shutting down
Sorry to those who loved ordering food deliveries from Amazon, but those days are over.
More specifically, the days of Amazon Restaurants are over. GeekWire reported on Tuesday that Amazon had shut down the in-house food delivery service about four years after its launch. That means customers in more than 20 U.S. markets will likely have to turn to competitors like GrubHub and UberEats to satiate their hunger.
The official shutdown date is June 24, Amazon told GeekWire.
Amazon started Restaurants in Seattle in 2015 and expanded it to a couple dozen other markets after that. Aside from U.S. cities, it also made its way to London. Amazon shut down the London branch of Restaurants late last year, which could have been a sign of its impending U.S. demise, in retrospect.
GeekWire also amusingly pointed out that the Amazon Restaurants Twitter account was still updating as of Monday.
By the time of its death, Amazon Restaurants served customers in Seattle, New York, Miami, Dallas and several other major markets. Hungry Amazon users could order food through the Amazon Restaurants website or the Prime Now app.
Back in 2016, Mashable tried an Amazon food delivery after the service launched in Manhattan. Our verdict? The food showed up slightly later than it was supposed to, but tasted fine. Amazon automatically sent a $10 credit for a late delivery, which was nice.
Even though Amazon shut down Restaurants, there are still plenty of ways to get food while lining the pockets of Jeff Bezos. The company still owns Whole Foods, which got grocery pickup last year. There are also supposedly plans to open a separate line of Amazon grocery stores.
Aside from that, Amazon will happily send you fresh ingredients with AmazonFresh grocery deliveries. There are no shortage of ways to get food delivered to your door, which may have been what killed Amazon Restaurants in the first place.
