Leigh-Anne Pinnock; The Newest Singer Turned Actress.
It has just recently hit the news that Little Mix band member Leigh-Anne Pinnock is going to star in her first-ever film. The Christmas film by the name of ‘Boxing Day’ is inspired by the writer, director, and star of the film Aml Ameen’s life as a British-Caribbean man. The film follows the story of British author Melvin (Ameen) who returns to London from his home in America for Christmas with his family, bringing his American fiancée, Lisa (Aja Naomi King) along with him. During their trip, Lisa gets to meet Melvin’s eccentric British-Caribbean family and discovers the world that her fiancée left behind including a beloved ex-girlfriend, Georgia (Pinnock).
The nation is so excited to see the adored musician and mother of two on the big screen. We have watched her grow in front of our eyes as she was ¼ of the first band to ever win x-factor in 2011, then topping our charts with their music, getting engaged, becoming a mother of twins, and now an actress. Of course, Leigh-Anne is not the first singer to have a go at acting; Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Harry Styles are notable names who have been successful in their attempts. However, this time it is a little bit different as Leigh-Anne’s step onto the big screen is more than just a career opportunity, it is a chance to be part of a predominantly black cast.
As we know from Leigh-Anne’s documentary ‘Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop, and Power’ she is determined to take a stand against racism. In her documentary she explores not just her individual experiences as a female black musician, but also goes to other women of colour in the industry and shines a light on the racism and abuse they have all faced for simply following their dreams. Leigh-Anne has made it very clear how she feels about racism in this country and how it isn’t hard to give people of colour a voice or the same opportunity that the white community gets.
The film aims to do that. It isn’t common to see a predominantly black cast on British television, especially a Christmas film. This film aims to highlight the experiences and the world of the British-Caribbean community in a way that we probably haven’t seen before, in an authentic and real way. I can definitely say, I’m excited to see the film and will be intrigued to see whether or not Leigh-Anne Pinnock will make a good actress.
