What to stream with your dad Father’s Day weekend 2019
Whether you’re treating your father to some barbecue, a game of flag football, or something less stereotypical, there’s always time to squeeze a movie or show into your Father’s Day plans!
Here are 15 films and series, all streaming now, about dads, for dads, and perfect for watching with your dad this weekend.
Note: Many of the films and shows on this list are not suitable for all ages, so we’ve marked the kid-friendliest options with an asterisk (*) for your knowledge. Enjoy!
1. Bob’s Burgers Seasons 1 – 9 *
The Belchers are an all-around fantastic family, and Bob is an exceptionally good dad.
Whether he’s teaching Tina to drive, feuding with Gene on local television, or protecting his community garden plot from an angry Louise, Bob loves his kids through each and every episode of this delightful animated series.
Considering Bob’s just wrapped up its ninth season, a full series binge won’t be possible for you and your dad this weekend. But, at just half an hour a pop, a few (dozen) episodes couldn’t hurt.
Bob’s Burgers Seasons 1-9 are available on Hulu.
2. Searching (2018)
Move aside, Liam Neeson! John Cho is the new concerned dad in town.
In this thriller, Cho plays David Kim, a loving father searching for his daughter after she mysteriously goes missing. Aided by Detective Rosemary Vick (Debra Messing), David will stop at nothing to bring his daughter home.
A rare film that gets the internet right, this tense cyber drama will keep you and your dad on the edge of your seats.
Searching (2018) is available on STARZ.
3. Stranger Things Seasons 1 – 2
Yes, Netflix’s beloved sci-fi series is far more mothership than fatherhood, but you have to get your dad caught up before Stranger Things 3 arrives this July.
Dark, funny, tense, and scary, the mysterious ongoings of Hawkins, Indiana are a terrific binge for any time of the year. But the relationship between Chief Hopper (David Harbour) and his adopted daughter Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) makes for exceptionally wonderful Father’s Day viewing.
Stranger Things Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.
4. Christopher Robin (2018) *
The Hundred Acre Woods are what kids’ and dads’ dreams are made of.
A live-action Winnie-the-Pooh sequel from Disney, this adorable movie chronicles the adventures of a now adult Christopher Robin as he is forced to return to his childhood fantasy world to save its endangered inhabitants.
Moving, fun, and generally precious, Christopher Robin is like Robin Williams’ Hook for Winnie-the-Pooh lovers — not to mention a perfect addition to your Father’s Day Weekend.
(Fun fact: this reporter saw Christopher Robin for the first time with her dad at the El Capitan in Los Angeles last June, and both left the theater sobbing! Highly recommend.)
Christopher Robin (2018) is available on Netflix.
5. Hearts Beat Loud (2018)
If anyone in all of Hollywood was born to play the “sort of cool guitarist dad,” it’s Nick Offerman.
A tender and sweet portrayal of father-daughter dynamics, this comedic drama follows Frank (Offerman) and his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) as they explore the new boundaries of their relationship before Sam leaves for college. Forming a pseudo band, the two bond and grow apart through music.
Surprisingly touching and with a truly great soundtrack, Hearts Beat Loud is the perfect quick watch for you and your dad this weekend. Just don’t start a band over it.
Hearts Beat Loud (2018) is available on Hulu.
6. Dangal (2016)
This 2016 Bollywood movie tells the true story of female wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, daughters of amateur male wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat.
Actor Aamir Khan, known for his judicious film choices, produced the film and plays Mahavir with the harsh edge of a disciplinarian with big dreams for his children. Geeta and Babita resent the grueling training in their teens, but Geeta excels at the sport, eventually ditching her father’s coaching but never forgetting his influence or their complicated relationship.
This movie resembled absolutely nothing of my own relationship with my father, but I cried through it in its entirety, and you can too! -Proma Khosla, Entertainment Reporter
Dangal (2016) is available on Netflix.
7. Evan Almighty (2007) *
A stand-alone sequel to the beloved Jim Carrey comedy Bruce Almighty, this take on Noah’s Ark circa 2007 is a fathering tale of biblical proportions.
Steve Carrell stars as the titular Evan, a buttoned-up congressman without enough time for his family. When he is chosen by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an Ark and save the people of Washington, D.C. from an incoming flood, things rapidly spiral out of control. It’s an easy breezy watch, perfect for the whole family.
Evan Almighty (2007) is available on Netflix.
8. Eighth Grade (2018)
Eighth Grade, the movie — not the nightmarish experience that can and will haunt most of us well into our thirties — is great.
An authentic take on adolescence from comedian Bo Burnham, this Elsie Fisher-starring flick explores a lot of what it means to grow up, and how parents can help their kids along the way. Josh Hamilton shines as just the sweetest of the sweetest dads.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll cringe, all as a father and child team!
Eighth Grade is available to stream with Amazon Prime Video.
9. The Birdcage (1996)
Two fathers, willing to do anything to make their son happy, dazzle in this classic ’90s comedy.
In the wake of an unexpected wedding, The Birdcage chronicles the chaotic blending of two very different families. Along the way, Nathan Lane dons full drag, Robin Williams dances his pleated pants off, and Gene Hackman brings remarkable depth to his straight-man role.
Charming, heart-felt, and hysterical, the stars’ electric performances and the story’s surprising twists will leave you and your dad in stitches.
The Birdcage (1996) is available on Hulu and with Amazon Prime Video.
10. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Seasons 1 – 2
Mashable’s entertainment team agrees: Dads love Tony Shalhoub.
This runaway hit from Amazon Studios mainly follows the story of its protagonist Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) as she rises up in the 1950s New York comedy scene — but her father Abe Weissman (Shalhoub) is the definition of a scene stealer.
Whether he’s lamenting his daughter’s recent separation from her husband or railing against two TV households, Abe is the worst and the best parts of all of our dads. He’ll infuriate you, he’ll delight you, and he’ll regularly surprise you. Pay him a visit this Father’s Day.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Seasons 1 and 2 are available with Amazon Prime Video.
11. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) *
There’s a lot to love about Sony’s 2018 take on Spider-Man — not the least of which is super dad Officer Jefferson Davis, voiced by Brian Tyree Henry.
As films like Sky High and Incredibles 2 have told us time and time again, parenting a superhero isn’t easy. The relationship between Miles Morales and his supremely funny dad is a tense one at times, but always wrapped in love.
From that adorable “You’ve got to say it back” encounter to that heartfelt apology scene, Spider-Man’s dad is worth celebrating this Father’s Day.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is available for purchase through Amazon Prime Video.
12. The Sopranos
Depending on the household, “head of the family” can mean very different things.
One of the all-time greatest mob families ever written, The Sopranos are a clan like no other. The late James Gandolfini plays Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mobster, loving husband, and father of two. From taking his daughter to visit colleges to murdering adversaries round-the-clock, Tony is one hell of a dad.
Rich with complex characters and complicated plot lines, this TV staple is too much to get through in one weekend, but you and your dad can at least start it. But be forewarned, if it’s your first viewing, you will struggle to stop.
The Sopranos Seasons 1 through 6B are available on HBO Now.
13. Jim Gaffigan’s many stand-up specials
All dads are funny in their own ways, but comedian Jim Gaffigan is a professionally hilarious father.
Gaffigan, a father of five, covers a lot of ground in his various stand-up specials, but his kids almost always come up at some point or another.
Whether he’s recalling a nightmarish trip to Disney or the never-ending task of concealing iPads from his toddlers, Gaffigan’s nostalgic yet realistic style is guaranteed to get you and your dad giggling over your own family’s memories.
Jim Gaffigan’s Cinco, Mr. Universe, King Baby, Beyond the Pale, and Obsessed specials are all available on Netflix.
14. Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Call Me by Your Name may be most famous for its central romantic relationship, but its excellent display of fathering should not be overlooked.
Michael Stuhlbarg plays Mr. Perlman, father to Elio (Timothée Chalamet), a young man struggling with his complicated feelings for his family’s summer house guest. Without getting into any spoilers, the events of the film result in a spectacularly moving monologue from Stuhlbarg in the final act, sure to have you and your dad weeping until the final credits.
Call Me by Your Name is available .
15. Ant-Man (2015)
And of course, we’ve got a super dad from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The relationship between Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson) is a complicated, but wholehearted one. Through his transformation into the titular Ant-Man, Scott discovers how to become a good father to his child — as well as save the Earth from certain catastrophe.
It’s a classic Marvel origin story, packed full of fatherly goodness. Enjoy!
Ant-Man (2015) is available for rent or purchase through Amazon Prime Video.
