Samsung hints at foldable smartphone with very obvious logo change
Remember Samsung’s foldable smartphone? Yes, the one that we keep hearing about for years, and yet it never seems to materialize?
Well, it seems Samsung is finally getting ready to do something about it. Samsung Mobile changed its logo on Facebook to the one above — an obvious reference to something that folds.
What this means, exactly, is a bit harder to discern.
In the last couple of months, the company’s CEO of mobile devices DJ Koh has been using increasingly stronger (and yet somehow still vague) wording to describe the upcoming device, saying it’s “time to deliver” and hinting that the device might be unveiled during the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco, which kicks off on Nov. 7.
The timing of the logo change strongly suggests that this will indeed be the case. But what will Samsung bring to the conference?
A recent report claimed that the company is working on a foldable smartphone, but haven’t yet made key design decisions. If true, this means that Samsung may not be able to show an actual finalized device this month, and it’s unlikely that it hits the market until mid-2019. Instead, we might just see parts of the phone’s user interface and concept imagery.
Whatever its plans, Samsung might want to hurry up. A startup called Royole recently announced “the world’s first” foldable smartphone, and rumors say some competitors, including Huawei, are working on a foldable smartphone as well.
