The first “Captain Marvel” trailer debuted Tuesday on Good
Morning America, introducing Brie Larson as the newest superhero
in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer begins with Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel,
crashing to Earth, already with her powers and little memory of
her past. The movie’s 1990s setting is put on full display early
on, as Danvers lands inside of a Blockbuster Video.
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury narrates the beginning of the
trailer, and says, “I was ready to hang it up, ’til I met you
today,” referring to Danvers. The movie features Fury as a young
S.H.I.E.L.D. “desk jockey” before he’s met
any superheroes. That all changes when he comes into contact with
Danvers, who says in the trailer that she “keeps having these
memories. I see flashes. I think I had a life here.”
The trailer flashes back to Danvers’ time in the Air Force with
her friend, presumably before she becomes Captain Marvel and
joins the police force of the Kree alien race, Starforce, which
directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck described to
Entertainment Weekly as “as
the SEAL Team Six of space.”
We get glimpses of the alien race that the Kree are at war
with, the Skrulls, including the fact that they can shape-shift
to look like humans (Danvers punches an old woman, who we can
assume is, hopefully, a Skrull).
The trailer ends with a glimpse at Danvers in her full,
red, gold, and blue Captain Marvel suit. The character will debut
in her solo movie on March 8, 2019 before joining the fight
against Thanos in the “Avengers: Infinity War” sequel in
May.
