Chevy’s first electric Silverado pickup truck makes its CES debut
Chevy is catching up with Tesla, Rivian, and Ford with its first electric pickup truck.
Beaming in from Detroit to the CES technology show on Wednesday, General Motors CEO Mary Barra gave a first look at the Chevy Silverado EV. With a 400-mile range, EV-to-EV charging, and a front trunk (or, “frunk”) for storage, it’s a clear Ford F-150 Lightning competitor.

The first models are expected in spring 2023, followed by a first-edition, higher-trim RST model in fall 2023. A base model — with a lower than 400-mile range — will start at $39,900 and be available in summer 2023. The higher-end model will set you back over $100,000. The Ford Lightning, expected to come out by the middle of this year, starts at $40,000.
The Silverado EV is an electric version of the top-selling, gas-powered version, with two motors, up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity, and 1,300 pounds in the truck bed. It’ll have fast-charging capability, adding 100 miles of charge in 10 minutes. The battery is the modular Ultium battery that GM is using on the Hummer EV supertruck.

It’s a work truck that can go from 0 to 60 in under 4.5 seconds and can raise and lower up to 2 inches for clearance. Throughout the truck there are 10 outlets to power tools and equipment, and the truck bed can be rearranged to max out storage space.
GM will offer its hands-free driving tool, Super Cruise, in the Silverado EV with a new trailering feature. There’s a 17-inch touchscreen in the center, an 11-inch screen behind the steering wheel, and a 14-inch Heads-Up Display projected onto the front windshield.

Reservations for the e-truck are now open on Chevy’s website. More Silverado EV variants will become available after the initial release, like the “Trail Boss” model, which Barra described as “more rugged” and better for off-roading.

Barra also revealed two more EVs coming to the GM lineup in 2023: the Equinox and Blazer SUVs. The Equinox EV will start at $30,000 as part of GM’s goal to offer 30 EVs by 2025.
