Amazon’s Echo Buds are overheating, so you should update them now
Amazon would like Echo Buds owners to avoid catastrophe.
If you happen to own a pair of the wireless earbuds Amazon released last September, go ahead and check your inbox. Per Android Central, Amazon sent a message to Echo Buds owners imploring them to download the latest software update as soon as possible. The reason? They might get way too hot while they charge.
“We recently determined that in very rare cases it is possible for Echo Buds to overheat while in the charging case,” Amazon’s email said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have released a software update that addresses this potential safety risk and improves the long-term performance of Echo Buds’ batteries.”
That means you need to open the Alexa mobile app, navigate through the “Devices” menu until you reach the Echo Buds section, then check the version number in the “About” menu. According to Android Central, “318119151” is the number you’re looking for. If the version number is lower than that, put the Echo Buds in their charging case and wait for them to update.
We’re not sure how widespread this overheating issue was, but obviously Amazon felt it was enough of a risk to issue a quick update and warn everyone who uses the Echo Buds to install it. Maybe the company was just trying to avoid lawsuits. Whatever the case may be, we highly recommend Echo Buds enthusiasts make sure their buds are up to date.
