Every single wig Moira Rose has worn on ‘Schitt’s Creek’
Schitt’s Creek is unlike any other show on television for so many reasons, the most visually apparent of which may be Moira Rose’s iconic, statement-making wigs.
The theatrical, stylish, and tremendously layered character of Moira Rose (played by the legendary Catherine O’Hara) lives for wigs. She coordinates outfits around them, matches them to her moods, and has made the hairpieces an important part of her eccentric personality.
In an interview with Variety, O’Hara, who’d been inspired by two friends who changed wigs frequently, said that she was the one who first asked if Moira could wear wigs whenever she felt like. As a character-revealing habit, it totally worked. Ana Sorys, the hairstylist behind the Schitt’s Creek wig-gallery, revealed that Moira has more than 100 different hairpieces for the show. Love that journey for her!
In the pilot episode, we get a look at Moira’s natural hair (shown below), which she sports frequently throughout the series. But as the show progresses, we get to delight in dozens of wigged Moira alter-egos.
There have been a lot of “Best Wig” roundups over the years, but what the world really needed was someone to create a comprehensive list of every single wig that Moira’s worn on Schitt’s Creek so far. As a dedicated fan of the show, I decided I was up for the ambitious task.
I scrolled through all 66 episodes of the show using Netflix’s scrubber preview bar, and took a screenshot of every Moira wig (and a select few wig-like hats) that I saw. I am 99% sure this is every wig, but if I missed one, please let me know. And also, forgive me. My eyes are tired as hell.
Season 1, episode 1: “Our Cup Runneth Over”
In the pilot, viewers get their first look at Moira’s collection of wigs. She frantically rushes to pack them away in bags while the family’s assets are being seized, so you know they’re important to her. And she utters the beautiful line, “Did you put Kristen with Robin? They don’t like each other,” which leads us to believe that, yes, all her wigs have names.
Season 1, episode 2: “The Drip”
We see Moira flaunt her first statement wig when she, Johnny, and David go to Jocelyn and Roland’s house in hopes of getting his signature on some documents. This wig saw the horror of Jocelyn’s cheese ball and helped slap Roland across the face. It’s a powerful one.
Season 1, episode 3: “Don’t Worry, It’s His Sister”
In episode 3, we get a nice shot of Moira’s wig wall (and a rogue wig on a suitcase) before seeing her in a dramatic dark wig and sunglasses. Moira hides in the closet because she just read comments online that called her irrelevant. Never read the comments, Moira!
Season 1, episode 5: “The Cabin”
Another quick shot of the wigs before Johnny and Moira break into that cabin and have sex.
Season 1, episode 6: “Wine and Roses”
When Moira visits a local winery to taste its fruit wine before agreeing to be a spokesperson, she wears her hair in this very bold, spiky, Statue-of-Liberty-meets-lion style. Fierce.
Season 1, episode 7: “Turkey Shoot”
This one’s a huge episode for Moira’s hair. We get a full shot of the wig wall when a freshly showered Moira realizes her towel isn’t in the bathroom, then she winds up emerging from the motel with a shirt wrapped around her head. It’s not technically a wig, but it’s an important look, and inspires Jocelyn to take Moira to the salon where one of her actual wigs gets the Jocelyn treatment. ?
Season 1, episode 9: “Carl’s Funeral”
Johnny gets roped into speaking at a stranger named Carl’s funeral, and Moira attends the somber event alongside him with colorful streaks in her hair and a headpiece of black feathers.
Season 1, episode 10: “Honeymoon”
Moira breaks out a new wig to attend a party at Roland and Jocelyn’s house. At one point during the festivities, Jocelyn says to Moira, “I have to ask you, are those wigs real hair? I just want to reach out and touch it.” Moira quickly replies, “No, please don’t. Maureen does not like to be man-handled.”
Season 1, episode 11: “Little Sister”
Moira’s younger sister Deedee visits in episode 11, and the stress of it all obviously calls for a wig.
Season 1, episode 12: “Surprise Party”
Moira wears an absolutely elegant wig to her surprise birthday party that she most definitely knows about in episode 12. Queen.
Season 1, episode 13: “Town for Sale”
A fur coat-clad Moira wears this particularly daring hairstyle when pressuring Jocelyn to join her in wearing a fur coat. How fun!
Season 2, episode 1: “Finding David”
OK, so it’s not a wig exactly, but the hat Moira wears when the family goes to rescue David from that Amish farm has Big Wig Energy and deserves a shoutout.
Season 2, episode 3: “Jazzagals”
Below is an important wig for an important audition with Schitt’s Creek’s all-women a cappella singing group, the Jazzagals.
Season 2, episode 4: “Estate Sale”
And here’s the wig that Moira chose to wear to an estate sale. (Shopping upsets her now.)
Season 2, episode 7: “The Candidate”
Here we have Moira’s “I’m running for Town Council” wig. A real eye-catcher.
Season 2, episode 8: “Milk Money”
A classy golden-brown updo with bangs and two face-framing pieces hanging down? We’re obsessed with this.
Season 2, episode 10: “Ronnie’s Party”
Moira chose this curly red wig to wear to a gathering at Ronnie’s house. A chaotic wig suitable for a chaotic night.
Season 2, episode 12: “Lawn Signs”
Moira’s few campaign lawn signs go missing in this Season 2 episode, but luckily, she’s wearing a good wig.
Season 2, episode 13: “Happy Anniversary”
Is this a wig? Is this normal hair? I can’t tell anymore. The power of television! Anyway, we included the pic because Beyoncé would approve of this hat.
Season 3, episode 1: “Opening Night”
Also not a wig, but this hat has Big Wig Energy if I’ve ever seen it.
Season 3, episode 2: “The Throuple”
The Official Wig of Alexis and Moira planning a mother/daughter lunch.
Season 3, episode 3: “New Car”
We thought we’d give you a wig wall refresher before unveiling Moira’s “shopping for a new car” look. She took it upon herself to assume a less fancy appearance before going to the car lot with Johnny in hopes that her new look would help secure them a lower price on a vehicle.
Season 3, episode 5: “Rooms by the Hour”
Moira chose this long-haired wig with bouncy light brown curls to prep for a film audition. We approve.
Season 3, episode 6: “Murder Mystery”
The debut of the pink wig? Iconic. When one of us shines, all of us shine.
Season 3, episode 10: “Sebastien Raine”
David’s ex is in town to do a photoshoot for Moira, and you better believe she’s wearing a wig.
Season 3, episode 11: “Stop Saying Lice!”
Alexis has lice, and Moira is giving off absolutely huge Hot Topic Mom vibes with this wig.
Season 3, episode 13: “Grad Night”
Moira wore the cutest blonde/black streaked wig with pigtails and some sort of headband situation to surprise Alexis at her high school graduation. The Jazzagals rocked it.
Season 4, episode 3: “Asbestos Fest”
If you count this old photo of Catherine O’Hara, Moira showcases three exciting hairstyles in “Asbestos Fest.” We especially love the long Cher-esque wig she wears at the end of the episode.
Season 4, episode 4: “Girls’ Night”
The blue wig! The blue wig! The! Blue! Wig! This is not a drill.
Season 4, episode 5: “RIP Moira Rose”
Rumor on the old reliable internet is that Moira Rose is dead. She’s very much alive in her motel room, though, and decides to emerge and reclaim her place among the living looking as glam as possible.
Season 4, episode 6: “Open Mic”
In one of the greatest episodes of the series — the one where Patrick sings “Simply the Best” to David — Moira donned a long blonde wig with side-swept bangs.
Season 4, episode 7: “The Barbecue”
This red wig is hotter than the grill at the awkward Rose family barbecue (feat. Stevie and Patrick).
Season 4, episode 8: “The Jazzaguy”
Johnny almost stole the spotlight from Moira at a Jazzagals rehearsal. Thankfully, she had this statement wig.
Season 4, episode 11: “The Rollout”
Can you believe they would dare to summon someone who looks this stunning for jury duty?
Season 4, episode 13: “Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose”
A flashback to an elegant pre-motel Rose Christmas party shows Moira in her element and a beautifully sleek wig. After an eye mask and a wig brush in the motel, Moira looks just as lovely at their present-day Christmas gathering.
Season 5, episode 1: “The Crowening”
Who could forget Moira going full-on feathers for her role in The Crows Have Eyes III: The Crowening? It’s one of her most innovative wigs ever and the episode also shows Alexis, David, and Stevie channeling their inner Moira. How did we get so lucky?
Season 5, episode 2: “Love Letters”
While Moira loses sleep over love letters addressed to Johnny from another woman, this is her coping wig.
Season 5, episode 5: “Housewarming”
Behold: The wig that Moira’s wearing when she and Johnny are snubbed by Roland and Jocelyn. (Aka, they are not asked if they can babysit Roland Jr.)
Season 5, episode 6: “Rock On!”
An old Rose Video Inc. Employee Health and Safety Series tape gives us a glimpse into Moira’s wig archive, and later we see her and Jocelyn show off unique hairstyles.
Season 5, episode 9: “The M.V.P.”
Remember when Moira wore one wig on top of another as a wig hat? This combo is the real M.V.P.
Season 5, episode 11: “Meet the Parents”
Moira’s wig (and overall look) in one of the most heartwarming episodes of the series — the one where Patrick comes out to his parents — is perfection.
Season 5, episode 12: “The Roast”
This black frazzled wig with blue tints probably embodies how Moira feels when she sees Stevie and Patrick getting secret dance lessons.
Season 5, episode 14: “Life is a Cabaret”
Before Stevie shows up and gives an award-worthy performance in Cabaret, a musical directed by Moira Rose, Moira puts on a wig and gets ready to play her understudy. Thankfully, we get to see both women in wardrobe.
The sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek premieres on Pop TV on Jan. 7. We will, of course, update our list according to include any new wigs Moira will inevitably wear.
