NBC Peacock streaming service, Netflix rival: details, release date
NBCUniversal’s previously untitled streaming service and Netflix competitor now has a name: Peacock.
Peacock, which NBC named after its colorful logo, will offer over 15,000 hours of streaming content including classic NBC comedies like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” the company said Tuesday.
The streaming service also announced several original dramas such as “Dr. Death” starring Alec Baldwin, Jamie Dornan, and Christian Slater, as well as a reboot of “Battlestar Galactica.”
Films will be available on Peacock as part of an NBC partnership with several studios. DreamWorks Animation, for instance, has agreed to produce family-friendly original content for Peacock.
Peacock is set to roll out in April 2020 and will leverage July’s 2020 Summer Olympics. Pricing details for the service, which will have ad-supported and ad-free versions, were not announced.
Besides TV shows and films, Peacock will include news, sports, late-night talk shows, and reality shows along with 3,000 hours of Spanish-language content from Telemundo.
The service could also eventually include a reboot of “The Office,” its most high-profile TV show. “It is my hope and goal that we do an ‘Office’ reboot,” NBCU direct-to-consumer and digital enterprises chairman Bonnie Hammer said.
With Peacock, NBC joins other legacy giants in the battle against Netflix. Disney (Disney Plus) and WarnerMedia (HBO Max) will also launch streaming services after years of losing TV viewers to streamers. Disney Plus is set to launch in November, with HBO Max and Peacock following in the spring.
